Like I Was Saying...
Today was wet, cold, and dreary.
So today trigged a quick flashback of SNOVID 2021, back in February.
I went back to Burr Field to watch Marcos' training. I was going to stay in the car where it was nice and warm. But my fellow Rugby Dad, Mark showed up and he was ready to watch the boys train.
Fine.
Before I got out of the car, I finished up a Alex Kilbee vlog on B&W photography. Black and White intrigues me. I've shot B&W before with limited success. Still, I want to try it. I get there's an artistry to it that I need to cultivate.
If nothing else, I know that much.
So I toyed with my RX100, set a Custom memory for B&W photography in a square ratio to work on my composition.
Small drops of rain pelted against my car. When I looked up, I saw this blurry big tree in front me through the wet windshield. I framed up my shot and snapped a few photos.
The happy accident came in post.
At first, the reason I liked the photo was because the rain seemed to be moving. Then, looking closer, I noticed the definition of the water outlining the tree. For some reason, that resonated with me. I thought it was cool. Don't ask me why, but it did.
I had another picture that rivaled this one, but the definition of the water sealed the deal for me. So this is the one I picked.
Using that momentum, I went out and took some shots of the boys training. I'm finding that if I can take one shot, another one is soon to follow.
I'll post that gallery here as well.
But for right now, my rule is to shoot "my photography" in B&W with a square aspect ratio.
I'm also limiting myself to 24mm. That way, if I want a certain frame, I'll need to get off my ass and frame it. I hear giving yourself limitations spurs creativity.
The other rule is I can't fix it in post. So I can't take a picture in color and then convert in B&W in post. For the purposes of this exercise the picture has to be meant for B&W. Them the rules.
Right now, I'm in a pair down mode. It's about taking a simple concept and try to make something out of it.
If I could outline a goal for this project, it would be to publish a book in say a year or two, filled with square B&W images. All shot under the same constraints.
The good news is I'm shooting more. I don't know if that's function of the blog or something else. I'm still working through this whole process.
