Like I Was Saying…
Eden, Texas. 3:18 AM.
Lucy's done driving. I forget where we switched off. So we stopped in Eden, Texas. I didn't even know Texas had an Eden. But we do.
Texas has a city for every word in the dictionary.
So I run into the only convenience store open at 3 AM in Eden to take a leak and buy some bad coffee.
Walking back to the driver's side, I see this van Lucy parked next to and three people sleeping in the van.
I could've taken a front shot of 'em. But that shot would seem like an invasion of privacy.
Don't ask me why. It just would.
They won't know, I tell myself.
Yeah, but I would know.
Then, I see the socks on the dashboard.
I like the socks on the dashboard.
It isn't till I'm editing and cropping the photo that I notice the man on the driver's side is wearing black socks, and the woman, his passenger, maybe his wife or girlfriend or lover, is wearing white socks. Huh, nice.
I don't know why closing the door and shooting through the window feels better, but it does.
Like now, I'm viewing this picture through a frame. A window. Like a TV.
I hope these folks got their rest.
I hope they made it to wherever they were going.
Like we did.
